ww2dbaseThe 38 cm Siegfried Kanone (Eisenbahnlafette) rail-mounted coastal defense guns, or 38 cm Siegfried K (E) for short, were manufactured by the German armament firm Krupp beginning in 1941 after about two years of development. They were originally intended to be naval guns for use with aboard Bismarck-class battleships, but the scaling back of the naval budget made the four guns built surpluses. These guns had no traverse capabilities; instead, they relied on their rail car mounting to travel along curved rail tracks. They could be loaded only at zero-degree elevation, thus they must be re-aimed between every shot. 38 cm Siegfried K (E) railway guns fired naval shells of its caliber as well as the special long range "Siegfried-Granate" developed by the German Army that had a maximum range of 55.7 kilometers (as compared to 42 kilometers with standard naval ammunition). Only four 38 cm Siegfried K (E) railway guns were built.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase
