ww2dbaseWhen German soldiers invaded the Soviet Union, they were shocked that the Tokarev SVT38 and SVT40 semi-automatic rifles wielded by Soviet soldiers were more efficient than the G41(W) semi-automatic rifles they had. German arms manufacturer Walther, the maker of G41(W) rifles, reverse-engineered the simple gas-operated mechanism Tokarev SVT38 and SVT40 rifles used, and developed the Gewehr 43 design. Additionally, the design was improved so that the production time was shortened. The design began production in Oct 1943. In 1944, the design was renamed Karabiner 43. Between 1943 and 1945, 402,713 were built; 53,435 of them were built as sniper rifles fitted with Zielfernrohr 43 scope with 4x magnification. After WW2, they remained in service with the Czechoslovakian army.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase
