ww2dbaseFreighter Federal was ordered by the United States Navy during WW1 to transport troops, horses, and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean. Her maiden voyage took place between 30 Nov 1918 and 27 Jan 1919, sailing from the United States to France. After three trips across the Atlantic, she was decommissioned from military service on 17 Jun 1919. She was put for sale into the civilian market in 1937, and was purchased by a British company who renamed her Federlock. When the Pacific War began in Dec 1941, she was on time charter to a Japanese shipping company, and Japan seized control of the ship. She was pressed into Japanese service under the name Hakusan Maru. She remained under Japanese service through nearly the entire Pacific War. She was sunk by a torpedo attack by American submarine USS Crevalle on 11 Jun 1945.
