CSU to Grant Degrees to Japanese-American Internees

24 Sep 2009

During WW2, between 110,000 and 120,000 Japanese-Americans were forcibly relocated from their homes into internment camps. About 250 of them were students at California State University (CSU) at that time. On 23 Sep 2009, the CSU Board of Trustees passed a motion to grant them honorary degrees, and issued a request to the public to help identify others who might be eligible to receive the honorary degree. "It's just to recognize that America made a mistake interrupting their studies and we want to somehow make a symbol of recognition", said Provost Bob Koob of California Polytechnic State University, a school in the CSU system. This action by CSU followed similar actions by the University of Oregon in Apr 2009 and the University of California in Jul 2009.

Or just a cheap publicity stunt by the University?
