He is strapped into his parachute pack that also doubled as his seat cushion. Exiting the plane quickly with the parachute pack attached was part of the design, for obvious reasons, so even here that is what he did.

in photo 6 it looks like he's got his seat with him, maybe that's why it took him so long to escape the plane ?
