Actually, the photo was taken from across the channel at Calais with a telephoto lens with a wide open aperture for maximum depth-of-field. The Germans were gathering intelligence data on the radar station at Dover England. By chance, the camera caught the flight of Me-109s going by. Its really an amazing phto when you look at it from that perpsective.
