Stuka escort was one of many duties of JG/27 Flying formation with the stuka is a Bf 109E flown by the Gruppe adjutant.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109E was tropicalized
for desert operations.
The Bf 109E was the only fighter avialable
to the Luftwaffe, until the Focke-Wulf Fw 190
entered service in 1941.
The 109 was powered by a Daimler-Benz 601A
engine w/ direct fuel injection delivering
between 1,050 to 1,175hp for takeoff.

Armed w/ 2x7.92mm machine guns w/1,000rpg
and 2x20mm cannons w/ 60rpg. Some Bf 109s
carried 1x20mm engine-mounted cannon w/200rds
and 2x7.92mm machine guns w/ 500rpg.

DESERT ESCORT: DON'T LEAVE HOME ALONE

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4/Trop flown by Oblt. Ludwig Franzisket who was the Adjutant of I./JG 27, Libya, April 1941. Junkers Ju 87 of II./St.G 2

Maybe the 109 was on a "Freiejagd" or Free Hunt
and formed up and escorted the Ju 87 back home
The desert was cruel to both axis and allied forces. Crews could suffer engine damage due to enemy action, or have engine failure, survival equipment was carried.
