ww2dbaseThe Kaiser Shipbuilding Company was established by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser in 1939. By the time the United States entered WW2 in Dec 1941, it was operating seven shipyards on the western coast of the United States. Its Swan Island Shipyard in Portland, Oregon, United States was built on the site of the former Swan Island Municipal Airport. The airport, which opened for postal service in 1925 and for commercial passengers since 1927, was deemed to be too old to accommodate larger modern aircraft, so after the newer Portland-Columbia Super Airport had already begun service for some time, the site was repurposed for Port of Portland operations. The port authorities leased the land to US federal government in Mar 1942, who then allowed Kaiser to construct a shipyard for war production. Swan Island Shipyard began production in Jul 1942 with eight shipways. Between 1942 and 1945, it produced 153 T2 tankers. The Kaiser Shipyards shut down at the end of the war.
