ww2dbaseThe 2MR8 aircraft, employed by the Japanese Army as the Type 92 Reconnaissance Aircraft, were developed by Mitsubishi. The first prototype was completed in Mar 1931 using some French parts, but by the time the fourth prototype was constructed, the parts were all-Japanese, making it the first domestically-produced reconnaissance aircraft of Japan. They saw front line military service in the 1930s in occupied northeastern China under the banner of the Japanese Kwantung Army Air Corps.

ww2dbaseThe local warlord forces in Guangxi Province, China purchased two 2MR8 aircraft in Sep 1934 and a few more in 1935. They saw service against Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

ww2dbaseA single 2MR8 aircraft was built, named Hato, for the Japanese Ministry of Railways. It was ordered in 1935 and delivered in Mar 1936.

ww2dbaseProduction of the 2MR8 design took place between 1933 and 1934, during which time 4 prototype aircraft and 230 production aircraft were built.

The civil version of the Type 92 which was used as a survey aircraft by the Japanese National Railway differed from the military aircraft in having a 400-hp Mitsubishi A-5 engine. Externally it also had a glazed canopy over the crew cockpits and streamlined spat-type main wheel fairings.
